Featured Products

Designing Quality Youth Programs
$29.95
Designing Quality Youth ProgramsDesigning Quality Youth Programs contains lessons learned from camp directors as they worked toward improving camp programs, making their camps a better place for young people. Built on eight steps, including asking for input from youth and your staff, assessing and brainstorming strategies, choosing an action plan and implementing it, and then sharing and evaluating what has been accomplished. This process is designed to be individualized to draw upon and fit your mission and philosophy, to reflect input from your young people and staff, and to implement strategies that make sense for your program. The appendices included at the end of this book contain a multitude of forms and lists to help in designing quality youth programs. Also included is a CD-ROM with program-ready adaptable worksheets.

101 Camp Cooking Tips
Viki Spain
$19.95
101 Camp Cooking TipsThe primary goal in compiling this selection of tips is to provide every cook and every reader with the opportunity to say, "Oh, I never knew that," or "'Great idea!" This collection of useful tidbits will imprint itself indelibly in your brain's hard drive, enough to make you want to pass it on to the next generation (or summer) of kitchen staff at your camp or cooking facility. Beyond the 101 cooking tips, the book covers common measurements and equivalents, tips for understanding menu lingo, food terms, food allergies, buying food in bulk, and cooperative food-purchasing program guidelines.

Multiculturalism in Camps and Youth Programs: How Us and Them Became Just Us
Michael Shelton
$19.95
Multiculturalism in Camps and Youth ProgramsCulture affects our politics, relationships, how we spend and save our money, our leisure pursuits, what we eat and drink, our expectations for children, and how we approach work in our lives, to name a few examples. The book uses the organizational success model as its basis, which includes knowledge of specific cultures, organizational cross-cultural competence, and individual cross-cultural competence. This model is detailed throughout the chapters of the book; each chapter offers important organizational strategies such as a primer on diversity, an explanation of benefits and challenges of diversity, the leadership factor, the aspects of organizational change, tools for internal diversity, program enrichment, and marketing outreach. The book is produced in cooperation with the American Camp Association.

Expand Your Resources: Enroll in ACA's e-Institute

ACA proudly announces the inaugural launch of ACA's e-Institute, a Web-based learning system for camp and other youth development professionals. We know that the world is growing and shrinking all in the same breath, and we all strive to keep up with that flux. Responding to a changing world requires you to continue your professional development. By accessing courses through ACA's e-Institute, you can learn at your own pace, in the comfort of your home or office or tent.

The e-Institute is designed to provide cutting-edge courses for the camp and youth development communities. As the library grows, we will continue to look at relevant and timely topics that will complement your knowledge, enhance the skills of your staff, and provide powerful opportunities to supplement the work you are already doing in the youth development field. Although the courses take place within a distance education format, we have intentionally sought technology that allows learners to connect. The e-Institute has a live meeting function that accompanies several of the courses. The scheduled meetings allow participants to interact with the facilitator and fellow classmates to further learning.

New courses will be available throughout the year.  Courses available this "semester" include:

Designing Quality Youth Programs
If you believe your program offers a quality experience for your participants but also think doing even better is ideal, this new online course, Designing Quality Youth Programs, is for you. This course will take you through an eight-step process focused on a rewarding journey of organizational improvement that recognizes each setting is different, every program is unique, and each improvement requires a targeted set of strategies.

Camp Is for the Camper
The Camp Is for the Camper Online Training, Second Edition, course gives staff a jumpstart in considering their roles and responsibilities before arriving at camp. The program's four interactive modules address counselor responsibilities as role models, stress reduction while working at camp, demographics of today's campers, and behavior management techniques. The program content draws from the popular booklet, Camp Is for the Camper.

ACA's e-Standards Course
The ACA e-Standards Course provides an in-depth overview of the ACA-Accreditation process, providing participants the opportunity to examine and clarify the ACA Standards. A Standards Course is required for camp administrators new to the accreditation process, for camp administrations working with a camp new to the accreditation process, and when there have been significant revisions to the standards. The e-Standards Course meets this requirement and is also a great way to involve and educate additional staff members in the process. For more information about availability, please contact your local office.

The e-Institute also supports ACA's educational delivery methods and products. Some courses may be related to books or other products offered through ACA's publishing company Healthy Learning. When deciding on a course, consider related products that might enhance your camp's library or training manual.

Registration Opens for the 8th International Camping Congress

The Association des camps du Québec with the support of the Ministre de l'Éducation du loisir et du sport and its partners, including the Canadian Camping Association, the American Camp Association, the International Camping Fellowship and Quebec City, will host the 8th International Camping Congress, October 4-7, 2008, at the Quebec City Convention Centre.

Registration for the Congress is now available online or by mail with an Early Bird discount until April 15. Seventeen Congress packages are offered with special rates at four hotels near the Convention Center.  Additional hotels, bed and breakfasts, and hostels are also conveniently located. Be among the first to register for this unique rendezvous!  Quebec City will be celebrating its 400th anniversary in 2008 and will be welcoming thousands of visitors for the occasion, so early lodging reservations are necessary.

The theme, "In Living Colors", represents the diversity of participating camps and their missions. ICC Quebec 2008 is a unique international event with the goal of creating opportunities for the exchange of ideas and alliances between camp representatives from various cultures and various countries.  Not only is this an opportunity for delegates to discover Quebec for its camps and its capital, but the event also opens the door to the global camp community. The program includes keynote speakers, including ACA's CEO, Peg Smith, educational sessions, unique cultural opportunities, an exhibit hall, and seven meals. During the third day of the event, the program and Convention Center will be shared with the World Leisure Congress. The presence of both congresses at the same location and at the same time will allow different delegates to expand, at no extra cost, resources and contacts. Pre-Congress events include tours of Canadian camps, an International Camp Directors Course, kindred groups, and a two-day Teambuilding and Leadership Course instructed by Jim Cain.

Full information about the Congress and online registration is found at www.iccquebec2008.com. For further information, contact Linda Pulliam, acavirginias@ACAcamps.org.
