2008 Great American Bake Sale – How You Can Participate

Grants for Summer and Afterschool Meals

The Great American Bake Sale grants program will support efforts to increase participation among low-income children in summer and afterschool meal programs. Share Our Strength is specifically interested in increasing participation in meal programs that utilize USDA reimbursement through the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP), National School Lunch Program (NSLP), or Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP). Nonprofit organizations that work to increase the number of children that receive nutritious afterschool and summer meals may be eligible to apply for funds raised through the Great American Bake Sale.

Grant applications for funds raised through the 2008 Great American Bake Sale will be accepted from March 10, 2008, until May 30, 2008. Applications received later than May 30, 2008, will not be considered for funding. To access the grant application, follow the instructions at www.greatamericanbakesale.org/grants.

Operation Purple® Camps 2008

As an organization dedicated to serving military families, the National Military Family Association (NMFA) recognized the need for more resources to support military children. In 2004, the Operation Purple® Summer Camp Program was created as a way to help military children cope while having a parent deployed.

What started with 12 camps hosting nearly 1,000 children in 2004 has grown into a nationwide program with camps in most of the highly impacted military communities. To date more than 10,000 military children have benefited from this FREE program. Camps are free to all participants thanks to a partnership with the Sierra Club and the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation.

NMFA received multiple requests from many ACA camps nationwide and as a result in 2008, there will be 100 weeks of camp in 62 locations in 37 states. The enthusiasm from the new 2008 camps is contagious and NMFA is expecting the best camp season yet.

Information on 2008 camps and our program is available at www.operationpurple.org. For camps interested in hosting an Operation Purple® camp in 2009, please refer to our Web site in August 2008 where specifics will be posted. For general information on our program please contact Cynthia.Clagg@nmfa.org or at 800-260-0218.

2008 Great American Bake Sale – How You Can Participate
Share Our Strength's Great American Bake Sale is a national campaign that mobilizes people of all ages to help end childhood hunger in America by holding bake sales in their communities. More than 4 million people have baked, bought, or sold goods to end childhood hunger in their communities by participating. Since 2003, nearly $4 million has been raised to make sure no child in America grows up hungry.

The 2008 Great American Bake Sale launches on March 1 and concludes on June 30. Proceeds are granted to organizations in communities nationwide to help provide at-risk children with nutritious meals when they're needed most – during summer, and after school.

Now is your chance to help children in need year-round! Consider hosting a bake sale for move-in and move-out days, as well as during parent day at your camp!

For more information on how to get involved, visit www.greatamericanbakesale.org for more information.
